As you drive down E. Highland Street in Shawnee, keep your eye out for the Pig. Out front on a sign pole and in the front window are neon signs in the shape of a pig - the signature item in this well-known BBQ restaurant.
Van opened his first Pig Stand in Shawnee on on June 5, 1930. Originally across the street, he moved into this building in 1935 and has been barbecue-ing pigs from this location continuously ever since. He currently has other locations in Shawnee, plus one in Norman, Moore and Oklahoma City, but this one is his original.
Van's specializes in its famous Pig Sandwich, but also has a full menu of BBQ items, plus hamburgers, ribs and a kids menu. A trip to Shawnee must include a meal at Van's.
