There are many great hikes on Madeira. That is why we are here for a three visit in Nov 2010. Pico Ruivo is is a popular hiking destination, the most popular route being the challenging hike from Pico Arieiro. The moderate hike described here is from Achada do Teixeira at 1590 m, accessible by road from Santana. From the parking lot to the summit is 2.8 km and an altitude gain of about 300 m, 1000 ft. The track is wide and paved with stone. There are several shelters and a government rest house for refreshments.
Pico Ruivo is often shrouded with clouds. Choose a clear day and start early to avoid being enveloped by clouds. The protective railings at the summit were destroyed in the devastating fires in August 2010. Many of the trails are officially closed due to hazards of landslides and rockfalls caused by erosion after the fires and floods in Feb 2010. There were no hazards on this route to Pico Rivo.
