Castles are often used in the coats of arms of families entitled to use them. However, it is much more satisfactory to have a castle located near to a pub called "The Castle" So what have we here in Luton?
Well, mixed success really. There was indeed a castle in Luton, and only a couple of hundred yards away from this pub too. However, that is where the luck runs out. There was a timber motte and bailey structure here built in 1139 and demolished just 15 years later. There is no remaining visible evidence since there is now a branch of Matalan standing on the site.
