The name, however, is one that has been given to pubs for well over 100 years. Why? Well, the story lies in "them thar hills".

In January 1848, a worker at a lumber mill in Sacramento, California, noticed a shiny metal in the water below the water wheel driving the machinery. The rest as they say is history. By the time the gold rush was over in 1855, some 300,000 people had tried their hand at getting rich quick and half of those came from outside of the USA.

The sign itself depicts the rainbow flag - the often used symbol of the gay community.

Although not a great fan of modern pub signs, this one appeals to me. If only for the over the top nature of it.
