The plaque reads:

'Old Town Hall
Built before 1550 as Bedford's first Grammar School.
Endowed by Sir William Harpur in 1566.
Re-faced in 1767 in Georgian style by Isaac Clayson.
School Hall (now Civic Theatre) added in 1859-61.
Became the Town Hall in 1892.'
