Leader of the Methodists in America, Asbury rode an average of 6,000 miles a year to preach daily wherever a crowd would gather to hear him speak (source; wikipedia)

The Asbury sculpture is located at Asbury United Methodist Church, on S. Mingo Rd. across the street from the Tulsa Union High School. The church's architecture is stunning, and the fountain/sculpture out front are a wonderful addition.

Bishop Francis Asbury
(1745-1816)
Personally commissioned by Methodist Founder John Wesley, Francis Asbury came to America as a missionary in 1771. The consummate circuit-riding preacher, Asbury traveled more than 270,000 miles on horseback proclaiming the gospel. He spent much of his itinerant ministry in the rugged Kentucky wilderness.

The founder of American Methodism, Asbury ordained more than 4,000 preachers and superintended 224 annual conferences. Like many of his colleagues, Asbury never married and earned an annual salary of just $64.

Asbury is not only considered the most influential figure in early American Methodism, but the leader of the spiritual army which profoundly influenced the moral quality of early America. At the time of his death, more than 200,000 claimed to be Methodists.
