The standard references for a sign depicting a checked pattern are availability of games to be played - thought to be an ancient reference to games brought to Britain by invading Roman armies. It may also be an allusion to a coat of arms, in particular, that of the Fitzwarrens, who had the privilege of licensing alehouses in the reign of Edward IV. Thirdly, it may be that the pub in question was the place that the "exchequer" located himself on market days, settling the accounts of traders on a chequered cloth spread on a convenient table.
This pub is located close to the centre of the town and although there are no streets nearby with "market" names and the sign depicts a familiar eight by eight grid, it is likely that this is a market reference.
