This neon sign stating "RITZ" is erected above the front marquee of the Ritz Theater located at 10 West Main in downtown Shawnee. This theater began in 1897 as a vaudeville house, and in 1926 a new owner changed the name to the Ritz, and showed movies. Shawnee's first talking movie was shown at the Ritz and renovations in those early days included an organ to accompany the silent movies. Admission was 5 cents.
Operations ceased in 1987, however, in 1997 the theater again offered entertainment on an occasional basis, with local and regional shows. SRDS, Inc. is restoring the theater and curretly offering local and regional entertainment. The theater is one of the League of American Historical Theater's "Save America's Theaters" projects.
