Christophe Le Canne was killed shortly after 8:00 a.m on January 17, 2010 on the Bear Cut Bridge between the islands of Virginia Key and Key Biscayne by Carlos Bertonatti, the driver of a silver Volkswagen. The bicyclist was riding in the bike lane heading onto Key Biscayne when Bertonatti fatally struck him and kept on going. Bertonatti was apprehended by police near his residence on Key Biscayne.
The ghost bike was originally mounted to the Bear Cut Bridge guard rail during the memorial and for a short time after but has been moved and is now pole mounted between the Rickenbacker Causeway roadway and a pedestrian walk. It is on the Biscayne Bay side (or south side) of the road.
