Slovakia's parliament has been called the 'National Council' since October 1st, 1992. The sovereign Slovak Republic came into being on January 1st, 1993 and a member of the EU on May 1st 2004.
This building houses Slovakia's sole constitutional and legislative body, the 150-seat unicameral National Council.It approves domestic legislation, constitutional laws, and the annual budget. Its consent is required to ratify international treaties, and is responsible for approving military operations. It also elects individuals to some positions in the executive and judiciary as specified by law.
