Madison Square Park is a 5.1 acre park in the northern part of downtown San Antonio, located at 400 Lexington Ave., San Antoino, TX. The land making up the park was part of a land grant made by the Spanish Government to Joaquin Menchaca in 1778. Portions of the land grant were sold and platted for subdivisions by 1847. It was in 1847 that Madison Square Park was officially designated a "public square" by the city (1). In October 2010, a 0.65 acre portion of Madison Square Park was fenced off to make an off-leash dog park within the larger park grounds. The dog park has three entrances with "escape-proof double gates", assuming the dog owner opens and closes the gates correctly. Inside the gated dog area, the dog park offers mutt-mitts, a doggie drinking fountain, a bright red fire hydrant in the middle of the dog park, and benches for the dog owners. The dog park hours follow the Madison Square Park hours of operation: open at 5:00 AM and closed at 11:00 PM (2). Parking is along the curb at street side with parking meters only unless you want to pay for a parking garage at the far end of the park that is operated by the Baptish Memorial Hospital.
