On the busy summit of Pico do Arieiro, Madeira is a classic Portuguese geodetic point waymark. This prominent summit is not the highest peak at 1818 m, but it gets the most visitors as it is easily accessible by road.

On this summit is a visitor’s centre, radar dome, souvenir shops, an altitude sign and a classic Potuguese geodetic point waymark. We came as this is an amazing viewpoint and the starting points for one of the best hikes on Madeira, PR 1 to Pico do Gato and Pico do Ruivo. Unfortunately the trail was closed so we spent more time on the summit that planned, taking pictures of the geodetic point among other things.
We could see another marker to the west on Pico do Cedro so this determined our route for an alternative hike.
