The plaque reads:
E.B. Everett
Pioneer Grocer
The murals to the right depict a scene in Mr. E.B. Everett's grocery store in 1886.
Two years earlier, at age 33, he crossed the mountains from Leadville by team and spring wagon and opened a grocery in a tent on this corner.
Cooper Avenue was main street, connected to the Hot Springs by the Cooper Avenue Bridge. Mr. Everett began business under many disadvantages, but he had a determination to succeed.
In 1886, he replaced the tent with a brick store, one of the first substantial buildings in town, "fully worth $7,000." He expanded the building in 1892 to include offices and apartments above the store.
Mr. Everett operated the grocery for 25 years, and became a prominent citizen, serving as Garfield County Commissioner, town trustee, and a member of the school board. He died in 1921.
