The cemetery "am Hörnli" is central cemetery of Basel (Although it is in fact located on the soil of the neighboring town Riehen). It opened in 1932 to replace several smaller cemeteries and was extended several times since then.

It is a symmetric area of 50 hectares with 12 distinct sectors for graves. In the center there are 6 funeral chapels as well as the funeral collection, a museum. There is an internal bus connecting the main entrance with all sectors every 30 minutes.

The cemetery has about 40,000 graves, this is by far the largest cemetery of Switzerland. Every year there are about 500 inhumations and about 2,000 cremations.

There are many graves of famous persons here e.g. Karl Barth, Jacob Burckhardt or Karl Jaspers.
