Claude Chana (1811-1882) was an adventurer and first fruit rancher in Placer County. In 1848, he found a gold in the Auburn Ravine which led to a settlement in this area.

This large concrete sculpture is one of several done by local artist Kenneth Fox. The sculpture is located right at the east-bound Maple Street exit from Interstate 80. A plaque on the base of the sculpture reads:
