In Homer, behind the Alaska Ocean and Islands Visitor Center, is a network of trails that includes the Beluga Slough Boardwalk, which runs along a flat marsh to the beach where you have wonderful views of the Cook Inlet and the Kenai Mountains.

The trail and visitor center have free admission, though donations are gratefully accepted. Park in the visitor center or at the beach at the end of E. Bunnell Ave., at the other end of the boardwalk. Follow signs to go to the boardwalk, which is the easternmost trail. The way is easy and flat. There is a slight slope from the visitor center to the trailhead, but it should not be difficult. The beach is another matter, since the sand is soft, but the parking lot there sill affords good views.

Plastic was used to make the boardwalk. Some parts appear to be more securely fixed to the ground, while other parts appear to be kept in place with the aid of poles.

The marsh is a great place to watch birds, including eagles, sandhill cranes, and seagulls. Seaplanes fly overhead as well when taking off or landing in Beluga Lake not far away.
