West Cabin, Kachemak Bay State Park - Halibut Cove, AK, USA - Drawing Waymarks on Waymarking.com

In the Halibut Cove part of the Kachemak Bay State Park, we stayed at one of the public space cabins for two nights and three days. This cabin is the west cabin, which is the most remote of the cabins in this cluster. By water it is easy enough to get to - the front stairs shown in the picture lead right to the beach, where we were dropped off by a water taxi. By land, it is about a mile to the ranger station by trail through twisty terrain and uneven stream crossings. So, much of the time was spent at or near the cabin.

There was plenty to see from its vantage point. We could see all sorts of wildlife both in the water and on the land. A small list includes sea otters, porpoises, bald eagles, black bear - one spotted just 50 ft from the cabin (yikes!!), stellar jays, and harbor seals.

I like to draw with a pencil, but I find that I'm too busy exploring around to actually draw. In the time that it takes to draw, I could have walked a mile or two around the block and found other things. So, this was an opportunity to draw and not feel that I was missing something. My vantage point is on the rocky part of the beach, at the water's edge, about 20 feet from the bottom landing to the stairs. It was a bit awkward to stand on uneven rocks, knowing that if I slipped, I could end up in the water. The tides vary greatly in the bay, so this location at times is covered by water. I believe that the water was going out at the time, so I wasn't in danger of being whelmed. The date was September 5, 2010, at about 3:00 pm, local time. The day was thickly cloudy at the start of the day, then became mostly sunny in the afternoon, which really brought out the beauty of the area. The drawing took roughly an hour (I didn't specifically time it) and was done in one 'standing' plus some added shading while in the cabin (and just after a meal). I could have done more to the landscape, but I feel that I would have just muddied the picture to try to capture random brush leaves. I was using a mechanical pencil on sketch book paper. Thus, I was limited in how dark I could make shadows. But, overall, I'm pleased with how it turned out and invite others to come to the park.

There are no roads to the park, however, you have to arrive either by water taxi or sea plane. And there are no amenities here - no electricity, no plumbing, no morning paper left at the door. So, plan on staying a night!
