The bronze sculpture is by Lady Kathleen Scott the widow of Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott. The model for the sculpture is said to be the younger brother of T.E. Lawrence – Lawrence of Arabia. The base of the sculpture is inscribed, 'Lux Perpetua Luceat eis' (translated 'May perpetual light shine upon them').
