Happily, at least to my way of thinking, this replacement sign shows a red lion 'rampant'. The replaced sign showed a cartoon-like lion looking at the viewer, having removed his sunglasses, to reveal a pale outline of glasses and the reason that he is red, is that he has been sunbathing without sun block.
This portrayal is echoed by a large copy of the motif painted onto the wall of the pub (also photographed).
The red lion is a heraldic device, often referring to Scotland. This may be the reference here, although the earliest use of the red lion is thought to have been a tribute to John of Gaunt.
