George Tankerfield was born in York and, by the age of twenty seven, worked as a cook in London. He was a protestant who was imprisoned in Newgate prison for his beliefs during Mary Tudor’s reign. On August 26th 1555 George Tankerfield was brought to the area of St Albans known as Romelands and was burnt to death.

The plaque reads
