Edmund Becket was born at Carlton Hall, Nottinghamshire in 1816. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied mathematics. Over a long career he was a lawyer, becoming a QC in 1854, architect and amateur horologist. It was this last occupation that gave him the opportunity to design the clock mechanism at the Palace of Westminster, colloquially known as Big Ben.
In his career as an architect he was responsible for rebuilding the West front, roof and transept of St Alban’s Cathedral, a feat he undertook at his own expense. It is this work that is recognised on his gravestone outside the abbey.
