Robert Runcie was born in Great Crosby on Merseyside in 1921. He was educated at Merchant Taylor’s School, Crosby and at Brasenose College Oxford.

During the Second World War Robert Runcie served as a tank commander with the Scots Guards, earning the Military Cross for two feats of bravery in rescuing one of his men and for taking his tank to an exposed position in order to disable three anti tank guns. In 1945 he was amongst the first troops to enter Bergen Belsen. In the post war period he served with the boundary commission dealing with the status of Trieste.

Runcie was ordained in 1950 in the Diocese of Newcastle and served as curate in the parish of All Saints, Gosforth. Within two years Runcie was invited to Westcott House, Cambridge as Chaplain and later as Vice Principal. By 1956 he was elected Fellow and Dean of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. His career progressed even further, when in 1960 he became Principal of Cuddesdon near Oxford. He spent ten years at Cuddesdon transforming the institution from a traditional Anglo Catholic institution into a stronghold of the liberal catholic wing of the Church of England.

Runcie’s talents were fully recognised when he became Bishop of St Albans in 1970 and was elected Archbishop of Canterbury in 1979. In his time as Archbishop of Canterbury relations between the Church of England and the Conservative Party became strained as the Church involved itself in social and political matters. Further controversy was aroused by the Archbishops views on multi culturalism and his comments on the possible reconciliation with the Church of Rome. The ordination of women would also be a major issue during his term of office.
