"As early as 1882, groups of women had begun meeting on the grounds each morning to consider and study subjects of interest and importance to them. In 1889 the Chautauqua Assembly Board of Trustees voted to "consolidate, in one department and under one management, the various lines of the women's programs existing on the grounds." The Assembly Secretary then announced the establishment of a new department to be called the Women's Club."
"Mrs. Emily HuntingtonOn July 25,1889, Mrs. Emily Huntington Miller presided over the first formal meeting of the Chautauqua Women's Club in the first Hall of Philosophy with two hundred persons present."
The first Club House was purchased in 1917, but as membership grew, the house became inadequate. The present building opened its doors for a dedication reception on July 3, 1929. To this day, Board and committee meetings are held here, and members and their guests are received at the many and varied social, educational and musical programs sponsored by the CWC.
"Today, the Club sponsors over fifty student recitals during the nine-week summer season and grants scholarships to some thirty students in the Chautauqua Schools of Music, Dance, Art and Theater. The Chautauqua Women's Club has enjoyed a long and proud history as an integral part of the Chautauqua experience."
