The Order of the Oddfellows can be traced back, it is said, to at least 1452 when knights met at the 'Boulougne-sur-Mer', London and agreed that they would form a society for mutual support.

Over the years, Masters formed Guilds which supported and protected their trades. In response to this in an effort not to be sidelined, the less powerful 'Fellows' formed their own guilds.

The guilds were trade specific, but since 'Fellows' tended to be odd traders such as perhaps blacksmiths, the 'odd' fellows who were scattered about, formed guilds representing a number of trades.

The Oddfellows today, although the way that they work has changed, still draw their members from a variety of backgrounds.
