Cambridge, Massachusetts, is best-known as the home of Harvard University and MIT, and various citizens (Cantabrigians) at various times have billed the city as a "city of squares," "the world's most opinionated zip code," and "The People's Republic of Cambridge." Nomenclature aside, Cambridge has a long and storied history, dating back to the first settlers.

This Tercentenary marker lies on the eastern wall of the Cambridge Savings Bank, at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Dunster Street. The marker reads:

"Location chosen in 1630 to be the capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Settled in 1631 under leadership of Thomas Dudley and called the New Town. The college ordered to be here, 1637. Name changed to Cambridge after the English university town, 1638."

That marker is to the left of a gated vent - to the vent's right is a smaller marker, reading, "Here lived Stephen Daye who set up near by the first printing press in British America - 1638." A different topic, to be sure, but not worthy of its own waymark, and close enough to the other to be mentioned with it.

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
