Klaster byl zalozen knizetem Vladislavem II. a jeho manzelkou Gertrudou roku 1144, kdyz pro klaster vydal zakladajici listinu. Klaster je podle langheimske tradice osazen v breznu 1145 reholniky z bavorskeho Langheimu, prvnich devet reholniku ziskava od Vladislava II. knizeci dvorec Plasy a vesnice v okoli – Kaznejov, Sechutice, Vrazne a Nebreziny, od prazskeho biskupa Oty jeste patou. Klaster vznika na miste mocalu v udolni nive reky Strely, dnes leziciho uprostred mestecka Plasy. Cisterciaci ziskavaji postupne dalsi vesnice a uzemi, obdarovavani jsou nejen vladnoucim rodem, ale i slechtou, nektere vsi kupuji, jine vzdalene smenuji za blizke lokality.
Vyjimecnosti plaskeho vodniho systemu je dokonale reseni zakladu konventu, ktere bylo kvuli bazinate pude zpevneno 5.100 dubovymi kuly zatlucenymi do zeme. Pres ne byl polozen tramovy rost a teprve na nej vystaveno zdivo budovy.
