In Anchor Point, along the Sterling Highway, Route 1, is a sign facing the road near School Street, and not far from a visitor center. This sign states the following:
"Anchor Point AK - North America's Most - Westerly Highway Point"
There is a bench below this sign where you can sit and have your picture taken with the sign. I preferred to stand and lean on one side.
Note the qualifier - highway. There are roads in North America west of this point, but they aren't highways. In fact, the map I have shows that the "Old Sterling Highway" went a little further west. But, the present number has a number and connects the major settlements in the Kenei Peninsula with each other and Anchorage. Now, I had thought that there might be roads west, at least to Lake Clark National Park, but there are no roads in the park.
To make it 'official,' stop by the tourist information center, a little ways from the sign and get your certificate for a small fee!
Type of documentation of superlative status: Sign
Location of coordinates: At the sign itself at the corner of Sterling Hwy (9) and School St.
