In Portage, along the road that connects Portage with Whittier, is the Begich Boggs Visitor Center, which is within the Chugach National Forest. Just inside the main entrance to the visitor center is a Smokey Bear "Sit-By-Me" style statue. Smokey is sitting on one end of the bench, and the other is open for people to sit and either converse with Smokey or have a picture taken with him.
There is plenty of parking for the visitor center. There is a fee of $4.00 to see the exhibits and movies, though you can visit Smokey without paying the fee. The visitor center has a relief map, a gift shop and other small exhibits, as well as a theater where they show documentaries.
