In Anchorage, near the Anchorage International Airport, is Point Woronzof, which ends at a bluff at least 40 feet high above the Cook Inlet. This point has great panoramic views, including downtown Anchorage.
To get to the point, follow Northern Lights Boulevard (at this point it might also be called Point Woronzof Road) west until near a sharp left turn where it meets with the West Access Road. There is a wide pull-off at this location. Walk up to the top of the bluffs, then follow the coastline east until you see another point, with buildings at that point. The point is also along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, if you are traveling by bike or taking a long hike.
The point is about 4 miles away from downtown Anchorage. Anchorage does not have a very dramatic skyline. The tallest buildings have no more than 22 stories. But, in the morning, they did catch the morning sun, and I bet near sundown that they would really be noticeable, since the view is from the southwest. The city is surrounded by mountains, which at the time and date of the visit, was a dark, jagged silhouette behind the city.
A word of caution: take heed not to be too close to the edge. There is a warning sign. The face of the bluff is nearly vertical.
