Le domaine Cataraqui a été créé en 1831 ou en 1836 par James Bell Forsyth. Il acquit cette terre en l'achetant à la Commission des Biens de Jésus, un organisme chargé de revendre les biens ayant jusque là appartenu aux Jésuites. Il nomma son domaine en l'honneur de son lieu de naissance, Katarokwen. Forsyth étant avant tout un marchand de bois et un homme d'affaires important qui développera par la suite le chemin de fer. Il revendit son précieux domaine à Henry Burstall, un lointain parent, le 13 août 1850.
Henry Burstall, riche et entrepreneur, engagea une équipe pour refaire la villa. L'équipe de rénovation, menée par l'architecte Edward Staveley termina les travaux en décembre 1851.
Propriétaire de 1863 à 1905, Charles Eleazar Levey, banquier et marchand de bois, fait aménager les jardins. Il vend à Godfrey William Rhodes qui lègue la propriété à sa fille Catherine en 1932. Elle épouse le peintre Percyval Tudor-Hart, qui meurt en 1954. Après la mort de Catherine Lily Jennings Rhodes Tudor-Hart, en 1972, le gouvernement du Québec reconnaît le domaine Cataraqui comme bien culturel, monument historique et paysage naturel en 1975. L'année suivante, il en fait l'acquisition.
En 1996, le domaine a été désigné lieu officiel de fonction du gouvernement du Québec. Cependant, devant le manque de fonds pour son entretien, l'endroit a été fermé en 2002, la même année où il est devenu la propriété de la Commission de la capitale nationale.
Le 22 février 2008, la Commission de la capitale nationale, le ministère de la Culture et des Communications, la Banque Nationale et la Ville de Québec ont annoncé un investissement de 9,4 millions de dollars pour la rénovation du bâtiment principal, la construction d'un nouvel édifice et la restauration des jardins historiques. Les lieux seront occupés par l'École hôtelière de la Capitale pour de la formation en restauration, et pourront également servir à des réceptions et autres événements tant publics que privés.

The Cataraqui area was created in 1831 or 1836 by James Bell Forsyth. He acquired this land by purchasing it from the Commission on Property of Jesus, an organization responsible for selling the property that previously belonged to the Jesuits. He named his estate in honor of his birthplace, Katarokwen. Forsyth is primarily a timber merchant and a prominent businessman who eventually develop the railway. He sold his valuable domain Burstall, a distant relative, August 13, 1850.
Burstall, rich contractor, hired a team to rebuild the house. The renovation team, led by architect Edward Staveley finished work in December 1851.
Owner from 1863 to 1905, Charles Levey Eleazar, a banker and lumber merchant, developped the gardens. He sells to William Godfrey Rhodes bequeaths property to his daughter Catherine in 1932. She married the painter Percyval Tudor-Hart, who died in 1954. After the death of Lily Jennings Catherine Rhodes Tudor-Hart in 1972, the Government of Quebec recognizes the Cataraqui area as a cultural, historic and natural landscape in 1975, acquired the following year.
In 1996 the area was designated the official function of the Government of Quebec. However, given the lack of funds for maintenance, the place was closed in 2002, the same year he became the property of the National Capital Commission.
