Although a bit miserly with the gold coin he is holding in his hand today,
Winfield Scott Stratton was known for being generous with the money he received from the Independence Mine.
The interpretive sign in the museum window reads as follows:
Winfield Scott Stratton
1848-1902
Known as the "Midas of the Rockies", Stratton was enticed to Cripple Creek District by Bob Womack. His first claim, the Independence Mine, was staked on July 4, 1891. The rich strike made Stratton the District's first millionaire.
This memorial to Stratton was sculpted by Michael Slancik, a lifelong resident of Cripple Creek.
