Strætó bs' buses serve the Greater Reykjavik Area. Here, in Reykjavik, is their main interchange stop. All six red so called trunk lines start from here. They go out to Kópavogur, Garðabær, Hafnarfjörður; Spöngin, Fell and Norðlingaholt (all RVK). All green routes stop here, too: Serving the city area of Reykjavik using slower streets they connect the various boroughs to the trunk lines and the city centre. Blue routes do not operate from here. Other main bus terminals of Strætó bs are Lækjartorg (at the western end of Hverfisgata), Hamraborg (in Kópavogur), Ásgarður (in Garðabær), Fjörður (in Hafnarfjörður), Mjódd, Ártún and Spöngin in Reykjavík. But only Hlemmur has such a big terminal building.

At Hlemmur, there is the terminal building with some shops, seats and information available inside. Bus routes stop at different locations which are indicated by bright yellow signs showing the route number and direction. The trunk routes to Hamraborg, Ásgarður and Fjörður, to Hamraborg and Versalir, to Mjódd and Fell, to Hamraborg and Fell, to Ártún and Norðlingaholt and to Ártún and Spöngin/Barðastaðir stop at the north-western side of the bus station, on the western/southern side there are green routes and on the north east also
Buses run every 15 to 30 minutes (during weekdays) and 30 to 60 minutes during weekends and late evenings. During winter time, more buses than during summer are in operation.

Around the bus station, homeless people usually spend their time. There has been a documentary made on this topic by Ólafur Sveinsson in 2002 with a soundtrack by Sigur Rós.

The police office is situated at the northern side of Hverfisgata in front of Hlemmur. On the eastern side, at Rauðarárstígur, there is a Rauði Kross (Red Cross Iceland) office.

Hlemmur is only a few walking minutes away from the sea (north), Hallgrímskirkja (south-west), Laugavegur shopping street (west), Miklatún park (south) and a five-minutes-bus ride from Laugadalur Campsite (east).
