The Tremont Temple has been a church since 1843, and was a theater before that. From the plaque:
"Tremont Temple was once the renowned Tremont Theater. Most of the famous actors, singers and lecturers of the day performed here. John Gilbert, Jenny Lind, Daniel Webster and Charles Dickens all made appearances.
In 1843, the Theater became the Temple when the Free Baptist Society bought it. It was the first to provide free seats, and it was called the 'Pulpit of America' by Dwight L. Moody, the famous evangelist. The Temple burned three times. The present building was constructed in 1896."

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
