The first settler in the area that would become Ritzville was William McKay, in 1880, although the town was named after Philip Ritz, who had settled in the area two years earlier. In 1901, Ritzville earned title of "The Greatest Wheat Shipping Point in the World" with approximately 1,9 million bushels of wheat shipped (records show that between August of 1901 and August 1902, approximately 1,960,000 bushels of wheat were shipped thru Ritzville warehouses, requiring 1,900 railcars).

Ritzville has another claim to fame, as it is currently the home of the biggest annual rodeo in eastern Washington.
