The town of Davenport sits on Route 66, 6 miles east of the county seat of Chandler, Lincoln County. At the north end of the downtown area, Route 66 takes a sharp 90 degree turn, coming south, and turning west. This mural stands at this auspicious site.
The mural is painted on both sides of a concrete block wall approximately 8 feet high and 15 feet wide.
The North side facing Route 66 states "Welcome to Davenport" and has a painting of the old Magnolia service station a short distance from the wall. On the South side the mural also states "Welcome to Davenport" and has a depiction of the vintage service station which sits directly to the south of the wall, currently a small cafe.
On either side of the wall are two four-globe light posts from the early days of the town. An old, original, concrete post showing the intersection as 7th and Broadway also stands here.
This mural was created by Bob Palmer Studios. Bob Palmer is an art educator in Oklahoma, and as part of his Mural Painting classes, he brings students to various areas of Oklahoma to paint murals. Many of the murals you have seen throughout Oklahoma have no doubt been painted by them.
