Located in a small park near 8th Avenue and River Road, this sculpture is a WWI Memorial. The artist, E.M. Viquesney, has scores of these statues, mostly serving as War Memorials, scattered around the USA. The Smithsonian Inventory succinctly describes the piece this way: "A figure of a World War I infantryman advancing through the stumps and barbed wire of No Man's Land. He holds a rifle in his proper left hand and a grenade in his raised proper right hand." (

The years "1914 - 1918" are raised on the cement pedestal with a plaque below which reads:
"Dedicated in honor of those who entered the service of their country from Belmar, New Jersey and in memory of those who gave their lives in the world war.
Presented by the citizens of Belmar, New Jersey
Joseph Mayer, Mayor
Thomas S. Dillon, Commissioner
Thomas D. Joeck, Commissioner"
A plaque on the back of the statue has two long columns of local military members who died in the War.
