Botanická zahrada a arboretum Mendelovy zemedelské a lesnické univerzity má v merítku botanických zahrad relativne mladou historii. Nejstarší cást se datuje do roku 1936, zbytek byl zbudován v 70tých letech. Slouží hlavne jako studijní objekt studentum univerzity, ale stává se i cílem návštev domácích a zahranicních odborníku a v dobe výstav i široké verejnosti.
Výstavy porádáme obvykle dvakrát rocne: poslední víkend v kvetnu to je tradicní výstava velkokvetých kosatcu Iris, kdy je možné od pátku do pondelí shlédnout sbírku asi 350 kultivaru techto orchidejí severu, jak jsou nekdy nazývány. Jsou rozdeleny do skupin podle barev a barevných kombinací v návaznosti na casovou osu šlechtení, takže je možné shlédnout jak nejnovejší kultivary, tak i jejich dávné predchudce. Krome toho je sbírka doplnena i skupinou stredoevropských novošlechtení.
Další každorocní výstavou je podzimní výstava, jejíž termín obvykle spadá na konec zárí (aktuální termíny výstav jsou vždy na webových stránkách arboreta: www.mendelu.cz/arboretum). Téma této výstavy bývá každý rok jiné; od trav pres podzimní aranžmá až po ovoce. Zhruba jednou za pet let se koncem zimy otevírají sice plochou nevelké, ale zato sbírkove bohaté skleníky, aby návštevníkum zkrehlým zimou a unaveným šedými zimními dny nabídly barevnou krásu tropických orchidejí, jejichž pocet kolem 3 500 taxonu zahrnuje tisícovku prírodních druhu a zbytek clovekem vytvorených krížencu. V teple skleníku lze shlédnout malý vodopád a nápadité výsadby doplnené kovovými prvky s tekoucí vodou.
Areál zahrady se rozprostírá na 11 hektarech a leží poblíž zeleného srdce mesta Brna v Cerných polích. V dobe výstav je prístupný jednak z celorocne otevreného vchodu na tríde Generála Píky (zastávka tramvaje neboli šaliny c. 9 a 11) a také z dolního vchodu od parkovište u Boby centra nad mycí linkou.
Krome již zmínených sbírek pestují zahradnice a zahradníci v tomto areálu kolem 500 taxonu skalnicek, tisícovky trvalek, 5 000 drevin (vrby, okrasné kere, jehliciny, skalníky, ruže), 300 tillandsií a dalších rostlin. Celý areál je ztvárnen podle návrhu ceského predního zahradního architekta Prof. ing. Ivara Otruby, CSc. Brnenské arboretum je díky své poloze cenným zdrojem informací ohledne pestování rostlin a jejich sortimentu v podmínkách severního okraje teplé cásti Moravy na jílech s vysokým obsahem vápníku.

Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry has a scale of botanical gardens, a relatively young history. The oldest part dates back to 1936, the rest were built in the 70s. It serves mainly as an object of study for students of the University, but becomes even visits to local and foreign experts, and during the exhibition and the general public.

Arboretum Brno is due to its location a valuable source of information on crop and range conditions in the northern edge of the warm parts of Moravia on clay with a high calcium content.
