This 100,000-square-foot amphitheater adjacent to the University's Student Union was named for J.B. Coxwell. J.B. Coxwell is the owner of J.B. Coxwell Contracting Inc., one of the area’s largest contractors, who donated all the work that went into creating the amphitheater. This work involved moving approximately 80,000 cubic yards of earth, providing all surveying and associated labor to create the sloping amphitheater, enlarging the nearby lake, capturing and relocating all fish in the existing ponds before they were drained, donating more than 1,800 feet of concrete pipe for the storm-water drainage system, and demolishing 18,000-square-yards of a parking lot that existed on the site before construction of the Student Union. The project took about three months to complete and totaled $450,000 in pro-bono work by the construction firm.

The amphitheater can seat 6,000 spectators and was constructed with a nine-degree elevation to allow for optimum viewing by people attending events. The new Student Union complex, including the Coxwell Amphitheater, was formally dedicated during ceremonies on August 27, 2010.
