Richard Wescoat was an important early resident of this small town as the historical marker explains. In 1825, Richard Wescoat, who owned most of the land in what was then called Ilifftown, died and left money for the use of a free school in his will. He is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery across the road from the marker. This marker is located at the edge of Veterans Park in the center of town. The sign is near the sidewalk, about 8 feet away and is surrounded by pavers which is set into the grass. It is solid metal and made to last for a hundred years for sure. The sign is located @ approximately 107 Cape May Avenue.

The sign reads

Colonel
