The summit of Mt. Bonnell is the center of Covert Park. It is a well known location and gives panoramic views of the Colorado River Valley from the summit and along the trail leading to the top from the parking below along Mr. Bonnell Road. What many overlook as they look over the edge into the river below is that a short walk along the trail north of the summit will give them a panoramic view of the cityscape of Austin, TX. The plaque at the foot of the stone stairway to the summit states in the last sentence, "Covert Park at Mt. Bonnell provides a fabulous view of the Colorado River Valley and the city of Austin skyline." If walking up the trail, continue past the center/summit of the park and continue along the iron fence a little past the picnic table to the coordinates listed. If walking up the 100 stone steps to the summit, turn left at the stone marker and follow the iron fence a little past the picnic table. The view looks across the tree-covered rolling hills, with Austin's downtown skyscrapers rising out of the verdent wood along horizon. Since Mt. Bonnell is one of the best places to watch a sunset, coming here at sundown will give you the view of the sunset to the west and a view of the lights of the city skyline to the east. Parking is free along Mt. Bonnell Road and there are at least two main entrances to the summit. The park is open from 6AM-9PM, so sunrise or sunset can be viewed. The cityscape is pleasant to see in the day as well as in the night.
