Located on the south wall of the church this memorial is to Thomas Hardy, a renowned figure who founded Dorchester's Grammar School in 1579. Originally the memorial was in the south chapel which was used by the boys from the school.
This is Thomas Hardy of Melcombe Regis (1599), the literary Thomas Hardy is also associated with the church and with Dorchester. More information on the school can be seen here:

The inscription on the memorial reads:
'To the memorye
Of Thomas Hardy of Melcombe
Regis in the county of Dorset
Esquier whoe endowed this borroughe
with a yearly revenue of 50L, &
appoynted out of it to be employed for ye
better mayntenance of a preacher 20L
a schoolemaster twenty powndes, an
huisher twenty nobles, the almes wo
men five markes, the baylives & Burgisses
of Dorchester in testimony of their
grattitude and to commend to posterity
an example soe worthy of imitation
hath erected this monument.
He died the 15 of October, anno do:(1599)
The just shalbe had in everlasting remembrance.'
