This fine pure alabaster tomb of Sir Robert 1st Lord Willoughby de Broke. Sir Robert was steward of the Duchy of Cornwall and although the family came from Bere Ferrers he died in 1502 on a visit to Callington and under the terms of his Will was buried here.
This splendid tomb is one of the most striking and ornamental in the whole of the county of Cornwall. Originally it would have be coloured and gilded, looking quite brilliant. The tomb is surmounted by a life-size effigy of Sir Robert in a full suit of armour wearing the full insigna of the Order of the Garter. The Order was awarded to him after the Battle of Bosworth by Henry VII. One of the more interesting details, often over looked, is the carving of two monks on the souls of his feet.
