This boundary stone showing WD13, refers to the war department and is one of 46 similar stones used to mark out the Willsworthy firing range. They date from when the army purchased its first tract of land, virtually following the line of the old Willsworthy Manor in about 1900.
The land is now owned by the Ministry of Defence.
The boundary stone is beside the River Lyd which was fast flowing on the day I visited the stone. I approached from the south, which is Right to Roam land, but is it very steep and boggy and I had to climb over a hedge to get on the river bank. While there I noted someone else had been photographing the stone hence charcoal in the lettering!
