For the architect, this collaboration could only be realized through the construction of an «unité d’habitation de grandeur conforme», an original and exceptional concept that came in complete contradiction to the livings standards prevalent in Berlin at the time. Thus began two years of disputes between the Berlin authorities, who were particularly interested in the architect’s prestige, and Le Corbusier who did not intend to yield to the authorities on any front. As a consequence this building may be considered the architectural testimony of the missed rendezvous of one of the most significant architects of the 20th century and one of the largest building sites in Europe.
Since the scale of the Hansa district would have exploded simply from the size of the unité d'habitation, the senate offered Le Corbusier a choice of several parts of the city. He decided on one of the sites in the Berlin forest on the "Olympian hill" in a residential area on the edge of a wood.
The high-rise residential building was erected on an undulating plateau surrounded by a thick woody plantation. It was 141.20 metres long, 22.96 metres wide and 52.94 metres high and was orientated in a north-south direction so that all the apartments were facing south, east or west.
