Scaponia is a favorite destination of summer travelers and fall hunters. This charming, primitive wayside recreational area features a 7-acre nature park. Located 13 miles west of Scappoose on Scappoose-Vernonia Road.

Scaponia County Park is owned and operated by Columbia County. This primitive tent camping park is on the banks of the Nehalem River, 10.5 miles east of Vernonia and 15 miles west of St. Helens. RV camping is not allowed at Scaponia County Park. In fact, pulling a trailer or driving an RV into this park is dangerous. Tent camping at Scaponia County Park is very tranquil due to the dense forest cover and the nearby Nehalem River. Nearby are hiking trails and the tiny Gunne and Floater Lakes. Both lakes are a unique find with very few visitors and lots of wildlife viewing. Before hiking, obtain a good map of the area. Scaponia County Park is open year round, but can be very muddy and wet in the winter and spring. Reservations are not available. (
