Located at the corner of Park and Tremont Streets, the Park Street Church is one of Boston's most-seen churches, by virtue of its prominent location near Boston Common and on the Freedom Trail. The corner was known as "Brimstone Corner", with conflicting reports as to the name's origin: either due to gunpowder being stored in the church's basement during the War of 1812 or the fiery sermons from the pastors. It is a Congregational Church.
The plaque reads: "The English architect Peter Banner designed Park Street Church. It was built in 1809 on the site of the old Granary for which the adjoining burying ground, much older than the church, was named.
On July 4, 1829, William Lloyd Garrison delivered his first anti-slavery speech here and so launched his emancipation campaign with the words: 'Since the cause of emancipation must progress heavily, and must meet with much unhallowed opposition - why delay the work?'"

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
