This is a wonderful painting and a memorial panel to the former cox of the Blakeney lifeboat George Long.
During the First World War [when all the young men were away at war] George Long launched the rowing lifeboat into high seas with an elderly crew having an average age of 55 years each and pulled off two brilliant rescues.
His crew [oldest member 68 years!] managed to save 30 lives from two steamers on the nights of January 7 and 8, 1918, despite a N.W. gale, frost and heavy snow.
Four other members of the Long family were also in the crew of 18 men plus two Thompsons and two Starlings, demonstrating the often 'family' nature of RNLI service in coastal villages like Blakeney.
George Long remained cox of the lifeboat from 1896 until 1920.
