A stone memorial built into the wall of Hertford Library.

The memorial takes the form of a stone panel, surrounded on
three sides by chamfered stone quoins and topped by a gothic stone arch. At the
top of the inscription is a carved hart with “Borough of Hertford”
above the carving and “1899 South African War 1902” below the
carving
The monument inscription, below the Hart motif, reads as follows
IN RECOGNITION OF THE
LOYALTY OF THE HERTFORD MEN WHO
VOLUNTEERED AND WERE
ACCEPTED FOR ACTIVE SERVICE IN SOUTH AFRICA
THIS TABLET HAS BEEN
PLACED HERE BY THE MAYOR, ALDERMEN AND
BURGESSES
OF THIS BOROUGH.
