The Pliney Range is a U-shaped series of peaks and ridges located just north of Route 2 near the village of Jefferson, New Hampshire. The highest peak in the range, known as Mount Waumbek, is situated near the center of an east-west ridge.
The summit itself, marked by a small cairn, is wooded. But a clearing through the trees just to the east of the summit offers great views of the entire Presidential Range located to the south and southeast.
Most hikers reach the summit of Mount Waumbek by following the Starr King Trail approximately 3.6 miles from the parking lot to the summit. This trail, with a starting point near Route 2 and close to the center of Jefferson Village, crosses a prominent peak known as Mount Starr King (3900 feet) located 1 mile to the west of the Waumbek summit.
Mount Waumbek, with an elevation of 4,006 feet, appears on the list of the Appalachian Mountain Club's four thousand footers (number 46).
