Long Description:
The current fountain was built in 1861, but there are documents about older fountain at this location dating back to the 12th century.
At this time it was one of the largest fountains in Basel. Parts of the town wall had to be demolished and there were 24 horses needed to bring this fountain into town.
There is a cast iron chamois on top because of the name of the street Gemsberg, but the derivation of the street name itself is unclear. It was the first cast iron figure on top of a fountain in Basel.
Visit Instructions:
Only one log per location per person (meaning multiple visits -> multiple logged visits -> OK!). You should log your own waymarked fountains as well. After all, you did in fact visit the area to which you marked to way.
